Sports Betting Rule #1: Don’t bet on a game just because it’s on TV

Posted by in College Football Picks on October 26th, 2007 | Comment »

It’s usually a dumb idea to bet on a game just because it happens to be televised.  Usually ESPN’s Thursday Night College Football game is a game I always want to bet on to start off the betting weekend.  It’s so tempting to bet on, but unless you have a great feeling about the game, it’s in your best interest to not bet on the game and live to fight another day.

Last night’s game between No. 2 Boston College and No. 8 Virginia Tech is a prime example.  The line was set at Virginia Tech -3.  I was thinking it would be a low scoring game, that Virginia Tech’s defense would give Boston College trouble, and that taking VT at -3 would be a safe play because they were the home team and playing on Thursday night — it’s usually a great winning combination in college football.  If I would have taken Virginia Tech, I would have ended up in a very poor mood.  Instead, I used a little discipline and intuition and decided to pass on the game.  Great call.

If you took Boston College, you were sweating the game out until the final minutes of the game.  If you took Virginia Tech, you thought you were sitting pretty good for the first 58 minutes of the game.  Tech had a 10-point lead through the majority of the game, if BC happens to score, the worst that could happen is a push right?  Wrong!  BC recovers an improbable onside kick, marches down the field, and scores the game-winning touchdown with 11 seconds left to play.

This is a prime example of the rule that if you think the game will be close and could go either way, don’t …

Video Confirming How The Patriots Cheat

Posted by in NFL Videos on October 25th, 2007 | 1 Comment

Here is an absolutely hysterical video I came across on YouTube which details exactly how the Patriots used their opponents’ defensive signals in order to alter their offensive play calls. “Chicks dig the long ball. Rock and roll!” Check this out:

College Football Week 8 Betting Picks and Predictions

Posted by in College Football Picks on October 18th, 2007 | Comment »

Since college football has been so crazy, I’ll refrain from giving too many college picks and just point out the games that jump out of me.  This week there are two games that I like.  Also, don’t forget to check out the NFL week 7 picks and anlysis.

Louisville (4-3) -3.5 @ Connecticut (5-1)

The Louisville D is a joke and Connecticut has been outstanding all year. Sure Louisville can put up points in bunches, but Connecticut has been only giving up 12.0 PPG, while Louisville is giving up 29.7 PPG.  Connecticut’s offense will be able to put up points too, they’re averaging 33.2 and going up a defense that gives up a lot.  With those kind of numbers and home field on their side, I like Connecticut with the 3.5 points

Pick: Connecticut +3.5 Spread – Confidence 2/5

Cincinnati (6-1) -9.5 @ Pittsburgh (2-4)

Pittsburgh has been awful and Cincinnati has been outstanding all year.  Pittsburgh is going on 4 straight losses and there is no way I can see them snapping out of that streak against a very good Cincinnati team;  they should be able to beet up on Pittsburgh.  Pittsburgh’s defense couldn’t stop Navy: I don’t even think Navy had to punt the ball once in that game.  With Cincinnati’s 40.6 PPG average, they should be able to light up the scoreboard against Pittsburgh who has been giving up an average of 26.0 PPG.  Cincinnati also has a good defense that gives up only 14.9 PPG.

Pick: Cincinnati -9.5 Spread – Confidence 4/5…

South Florida-Rutgers Thursday Night College Football Preview & Pick

Posted by in College Football Picks on October 16th, 2007 | Comment »

If you’re looking for my week 7 NFL picks, you can can follow the link to get to those.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEK 7 REACTION:

This year has been crazy for college football, which is why I’ll stay away from betting on college football and stick with the NFL because that’s what I know best.  Too much crazy stuff happens in college football and it seems that turnovers and special teams plays happen more often in college and completely change the course of a game.

Last week I was between taking Boston College -13.5 over Notre Dame and South Flordia -10.5 over Central Florida.  I thought South Florida was legit, but I was dissuaded because everyone kept talking about what a phenomenal back Central Florida has.  I then thought Boston College was a sure pick over Notre Dame, who can’t do anything on offense.  Well I took Boston College big and ended up losing by half a point, which was from an missed extra point after their first touchdown of the game.  Then 7 of Notre Dame’s 14 points came by the way of an interception return.  I’m still not over that game; it still bugs the hell out of me.  But the NFL weekend made up for it thanks to the Patriots and Giants.

FREE SOUTH FLORIDA-RUTGERS PREVIEW/PICK:

South Florida (6-0) -2.5 @ Rutgers (4-2)

On Thursday night ESPN will feature a great Thursday Night game — South Florida will visit Rutgers.  At first I thought South Florida would be favored by 6, but then I saw that the spread was South Florida -2.5 and I couldn’t believe it.  I would have taken South Florida at -6 if I had to, so I love them at -2.5.  Last week …
