Jets 2007-2008 Season Preview
With Labor Day wrapping up the summer, my two weeks of vacation used up, and the realization that it will be April before I see another bikini, I'm counting on Mangenious and the Jets to help transition me into the fall. Like every Jet fan learns early in life, I'm scarred about the season because I'm optimistic. Historically, the Jets are terrible coming off a good season: they've only made the playoffs in consecutive years twice since the merger. With Mangenious at the helm, hopefully Gang Green will start a new trend.
Concerns:
- Kendall leaving: Pete Kendall was a great addition at guard a couple of seasons ago when he left Arizona because of problems with the front office(maybe a patern?). Sanwiched between D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold, the veteran mentored the rookies through a very good season. Unless the 1-AA rookie guard Jacob Bender plays way better than against the Giants in preseason week 3, we could see Pennington making another early exit this season.
- The Schedule: According to conventional ranking systems, the Jets have the 6th hardest schedule in the league with opponents having an '06 winning percentage of .516, 10 games vs teams w/ .500 or better, and 7 games vs playoff teams. The start is especially difficult, with New England at home and then a trip to Baltimore. I'll take 1-1 and be estatic with 2-0.
- The Defense: It looked real shaky in the preseason, but they aren't a line it up and hit em team. Hopefully the sneaky defense will come alive.
- The rookies: The Jets got some help in the draft with some bigtime playmakers cornerback Darrelle Revis and physical linebacker David Harris. Combined with Jonathan Vilma, safety Kerry Rhodes, Shaun Ellis and Justin Miller, I would not be surprised to see a lot of turnovers...and we're not talking about the delicious one your grandmother makes.
- Injury free (knock on wood): Hopefully I didn't just jinx them. As long as Thomas Jones plays Sunday, the Jets won't be missing anyone major due to injury. In order to have a chance this season, being injury free is a must.
- The Flight Club. The Jets now have a cheerleading squad. Big morale boost. I'm guessing this is worth one more win a season.
