I did a little bit of research online and found out a way to calculate predicted scores of these NFL games by the week. This system goes off of both teams’ points forced, points allowed, the points forced by all of their opponents thus far, and points allowed by all their opponents this season. You end up getting an offensive and defensive number that tells you whether or not they’re performing up with the league average in offense and defense, therefore spitting out a score for the game. These are what I got for Week 6 along with plays:

Cleveland Browns @ Oakland Raiders: Browns 18.68 – Raiders 30.98

St. Louis Rams @ Green Bay Packers: Rams 11.08 – Packers 40.07

The score that produced that biggest difference from a Vegas line was the Green Bay game having them win by 29 points which is roughly 14.5 points off the spread.

P.S. – Tried it out for the first time last week and it gave me Green Bay, Buffalo, Tennessee, Indy, Detroit, and NYG, going 3-3 ATS.

Last night we opened the NFL season with an incredible game between the Packers and Saints. What a game. Both QBs threw for over 300 yards and 3 TDs, while we saw some razzle dazzle from both the Packers and Saints special teams. What a pick up Darren Sproles was for the Saints, he’s making fantasy owners very happy. Jordy Nelson was the star in this one for the Packers (other than Aaron Rodgers and Greg Jennings of course) with 6 receptions for 77 yards and a TD.

It was good to see some old names in the pick ‘em league. 2009 Champion DeezNuts is back. Memphis Gangsters is also back. I’m sure I’m leaving a few people out, but those two are legends. It’s not too late to sign up! Winner gets free NFL Shop t-shit. The league ID is 63470 an the password is thepassrush. There’s still 255 more regular season games.

In a somewhat surprising move, nearly a majority of people in the pick ‘em league took the Saints +4.5. With a total of 26 participants, the league ended up at an even 50/50 split. In Yahoo’s consensus, 84% were siding with the Green Bay, although I believe that takes into consideration leagues that are both straight up and against the spread, skewing the data.

In the upcoming games, the Yahoo consensus is favoring the following teams in order: (1) New England; (2) Arizona; (3) Philadelphia; (4) Kansas City; and (5) Cleveland. I am high on the Patriots, Chiefs, and Falcons this Sunday, which you can read in my week 1 write-up.

I am high on the Patriots, Chiefs, and Falcons this Sunday, which you can read in my week 1 write-up.

I am warning right now, do not bet on the Eagles -5 against the Rams. I am an Eagles fan and very nervous going into this game. The Eagles may win, but it may be a nail-biter. The Eagles have serious issues on the offensive line. Vick has been on his back too many times this preseason and the Eagles are still claiming linemen off waivers to patch their offensive line together. With a rookie at center in the dome, expect a lot of false starts, which will really shoot the Eagles in the foot.

New England hasn’t been beaten at home in more than two years. Without Rodgers tonight, Green Bay really has no hope of winning this one outright. Cover the spread? Maybe. The Packers are simply a one-dimensional team and that won’t cut it tonight.

I won’t be doing every game, instead just the games that I feel very confident about.

1:00 Games:

Cleveland Browns @ Cincinnati Bengals

There is one thing that stands out to me in this game, and that is that Colt McCoy will be the starter for Cleveland. It just seems like they have so much more success with him back there at QB. Being a Cleveland fan myself, I was always a little nervous when Delhomme was the started simply because it seemed like he threw an interception every other play. The Bengals do have more talent than the Browns, but they have been just terrible this year. Cleveland is also coming off a horrible loss in Buffalo. I see an ugly game here with Cleveland winning by a small margin.

McCoy will be a big reason for the Browns winning today.

Prediction: Browns 23 – Bengals 17

Pick Against the Spread: Cleveland (+1)

Detroit Lions @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Can you believe Detroit beat Green Bay last week? I can’t. These two teams used to always play for the worst spot in the old NFL Central. This game means a lot more this year. With a Lions win, they eliminate Tampa Bay from any playoff hopes if they pull off the upset. Detroit has a terrible pass defense and which will allow Freeman to get his looks. I think Tampa’s run defense is worse though, and Detroit should be able to run all over the field. I see it going back and forth, but Detroit covering the spread.

Prediction: Lions 24 – Buccaneers 20

Pick Against the Spread: Detroit (+4.5)

Washington Redskins @ Dallas …

Pick Against the Spread: Detroit (+4.5)

Washington Redskins @ Dallas Cowboys

These teams are just playing for pride now. The Cowboys have some players that are actually in jeopardy of losing their jobs. Washington’s defense is ranked last overall. Their season went to the lowest of lows last week then a botched extra point that would have sent it to overtime turned into a disaster and they lost by one. I don’t know what Redskins team is going to come out today, and that goes for Dallas as well. I suggest staying away from the spread here and taking the total instead.

Prediction: Cowboys 27 – Redskins 13

Pick: Under (44.5)

4:00 Games:

New York Jets @ Pittsburgh Steelers

It seems like just yesterday the Jets were 9-2 and probably looking to get home field advantage and a top seed in the playoffs. Well, then they got smashed by the Patriots 45-3, and then they were beat by the Dolphins?? You would have thought after getting beat so bad by New England that they would have been out for revenge the following week. Well that obviously wasn’t the case, but this week it will be. I feel like the Jets won’t let it happen three weeks in a row. Yes, Pittsburgh is playing very good football right now. Roethlisberger hasn’t seen this Jets team since 2007 and he played terrible against them posting just a 58.8 passer rating. Sure the whole world is on Pitt here, I feel differently though. Steelers win but don’t cover.

Prediction: Look for a very low scoring affair. Steelers 17 – Jets 14

Pick Against the Spread: New York (+4.5)

The Chargers haven’t been beaten once this year, actually they’ve only beaten themselves. It’s a repeated trend that has hurt them dramatically this season. Special teams mishaps, turnovers, and being one of the most penalized team in the NFL doesn’t help either. When they play while making smart decisions and taking care of the ball, they’re virtually impossible to beat. So as long as they don’t make stupid mistakes, they should roll in this one. The 49ers have only had one big road win this year and that was in Arizona against the Cardinals.

Minnesota has definitely been looking for someone like Moss to be acquired to their team. They have only four passes for 20+ yards this season, and that’s the fewest in the NFL.
opportunities to Adrian Peterson all night long to run the football. Tampa Bay took advantage coming off their bye week by upsetting the Bengals, let’s see if Minnesota can take advantage of coming off theirs.

Minnesota has definitely been looking for someone like Moss to be acquired to their team. They have only four passes for 20+ yards this season, and that’s the fewest in the NFL. The Jets are ranked fourth in rush defense, but will have their work cut out for them tonight with Peterson, who ranks second in the NFL in rushing yards per game.

Minnesota is 5-0 ATS in their last five week five games, as well as 4-1 ATS in their last five against a team with a winning record.

Prediction: Vikings 24 – Jets 17

Pick Against the Spread: Minnesota +5

New Orleans Saints (-7) @ Arizona Cardinals

The key for the Saints this week is to slow down on their turnovers. In their last two games they’ve fumbled the ball four times, still managing to stay in the plus column in that department. The one good thing is that their about to face a

Cardinals team who allows 29.5 PPG and 388 yards per game. The Saints are still without Reggie Bush. Since Arizona has such a sad defense allowing 155 rushing yards per game, maybe the Saints will get their running game going finally.

New Orleans has won the past two meetings, but fell 34-10 in their last meeting in Arizona in ’04. I like that the Saints are 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings with Arizona.

Prediction: Saints 34 – Arizona 13

Pick Against the Spread: New Orleans -7

San Diego Chargers (-6.5) @ Oakland Raiders

The Chargers head into this game coming off two regular season wins last season winning 24-20 in Oakland and 24-16 in San Diego. Not only did they sweep the series last year, but also the five years previous to that. The Raiders have lost the four of their games by a combines 93 points.

I think this game has the making of being close most of the way, with San Diego pulling out some late offense to cover the spread. San Diego is 7-1 ATS in their last eight meetings in Oakland and 11-3 in the last 14 meetings.

Prediction: Chargers 27 – Raiders 20

Pick Against the Spread: San Diego -6.5

Tennessee Titans @ Dallas Cowboys (-7)

Dallas better be able to contain Chris Johnson. I think Vince Young’s best option this week is to spread the ball out. Dallas is 5-1 ATS in their last six when coming off a bye week. The Titans have won 10 straight against NFC opponents and 15 of their last 16. With the Cowboys playing a 3-4 defense Johnson must have a breakout game. The only thing holding back the Titans are that they are the league’s most penalized team along with Detroit, costing them 344 yards.

I like the NFC stat too much though. Tennessee has just dominated the NFC and I see them covering this spread handily.

Prediction: Titans 24 – Cowboys 20

Pick Against the Spread: Tennessee +7
