NFL Week 1 Fantasy Start ‘Em Or Sit ‘Em

Posted by in NFL Week 1 Start 'Em Sit 'Em Advice on September 6th, 2008 | Comment »

Each week, we’ll put together a Fantasy start ’em or sit ’em. Also remember, if you didn’t check out my NFL Week 1 Predictions and Picks Against the Spread, check those out.

Start ‘Em:

1.) Greg Jennings — The Vikings ranked last in passing defense last season. Jennings only had 43 yards and 1 TD and 63 yards against the Vikings the last season, but I’m expecting more from him this game. The Vikings should be able to shut down Ryan Grant (they were ranked 1st against the run last season), so that will mean Rodgers will have to go to the air more often.

2.) Thomas Jones — With Brett Favre making his regular season debut with the Jets, I expect him to rely on the running game to get him comfortable and the running game should do wonders against the team that was dead last against the run last season (Miami).

3.) Laurence Maroney — With Brady on a bum foot and Moss seeing constant double teams, it makes sense for the Pats to run the ball a lot with Maroney against a team that was 28th against the run. The Pats should see the endzone often and hopefully, that means lots of goal line carries for Maroney.

4.) Marion Barber — Dallas should be able to score in bunches against the Browns. Barber should be good for at least 100 yards and 1 TD.

5.) Joseph Addai — With Manning still recoverying from knee surgery, I expect Addai to be his best friend during his recovery time. Expect Addai to get a ton of touches this game.

6.) Joey Galloway — Galloway has a pulled groin, which is a concern, he hasn’t practiced all preseason, and he’s listed as questionable (but expected to play), but you can’t help overlook the fact that Galloway was the “Saints Killer” last season. He had 135 yards with 2 TDs and 159 yards in 2 games against the Saints last year. Galloway may be a good option at the 3rd WR spot, but his groin injury remains a huge concern.

Sit ‘Em:

1.) Ryan Grant — Grant will be facing the #1 rushing defense (Vikings). He shouldn’t be putting up monster numbers this Sunday. Opt for another back.

2.) Marques Colston — Colston is up against the 1st ranked passing defense this Sunday. In his last game against the Bucs, he only had 2 receptions for 39 yards. In the meeting before that, however, he did put up 70 yards and 1 TD. Jeremy Shockey may also take away some endzone looks. He’s still a better option than any fantasy #3 WR, I’m just saying there’s a chance he may be shut down.

3.) Willis McGahee — McGahee has a banged up knee and is questionable for Sunday. Even if he does play, I expect his carries to be limited.

4.) Brett Favre — Despite Miami’s 1-15 record last season, they somehow managed to be ranked 4th in passing defense and only gave up an average of 188.7 YPG. I expect the Jets to run the ball often in this game, so if you have another QB on your roster, you may want to opt for them in a more favorable matchup.

5.) Jamal Lewis — Lewis questionable with a hamstring injury. Even if healthy, he’ll have problems running against a tough Dallas defense.

6.) Jerry Porter and Javon Walker — Both are questionable with injuries.
