NFL Week 1 – Picks Against the Spread (2012)

Posted by in NFL Picks on September 1st, 2012 | 3 Comments

NFL Week 1 Picks Against the SpreadAfter looking at the Week 1 lineup, the only spread I’m going to go big on is HOUSTON (-10) over Miami. I’m actually going to tease the spread to HOUSTON (-3) & UNDER 50. With the Texans D, I don’t expect Miami to score more than 10 points. The Texans will easily cruise to victory. My other play is NEW YORK GIANTS (-3) over Cowboys. Other than those two games, nothing really interests me except Carolina (-1) over TAMPA BAY, CHICAGO (-9.5) over Indianapolis, and DETROIT (-9) over St. Louis.

NFL Week 1 Picks Against the Spread

NEW YORK GIANTS (-4) over Dallas Cowboys — I’m taking the Giants in this one. They’ve owned this matchup in the last 3 years going 5-1 against the Cowboys. L

CHICAGO BEARS (-9.5) over Indianapolis Colts — Bears looks like a potential play here. Andrew Luck looks solid so far, but the Bears defense will prove to be too much in his first regular season game. W

Buffalo Bills (+4) over NEW YORK JETS — The Jets offense is pathetic. They can’t run the ball, they can’t pass the ball, they can’t block. Take the points. Bills are my favorite underdog this week. You can also add 7 points to the Bills spread to make it +11 and take the the under 47.5 if you want to tease this one. L

HOUSTON TEXANS (-10) over Miami Dolphins — I am all over this game and very confident in my teaser with Texans -3/Under 50. W

Jacksonville Jaguars (+4.5) over MINNESOTA VIKINGS —  Should be a tight game with the spread. I could go either way with this one, but I’ll favor the points. W

New England Patriots (-6) over TENNESSEE TITANS — I’m staying away from this one as I want to see the Patriots offensive line come together before taking them on the road and giving up nearly a touchdown. The Titans are a quality team. I wouldn’t be shocked with a Titans upset here. W

DETROIT LIONS (-9) over ST. LOUIS RAMS — I’m expecting the Lions to win this one big. This is another game that I may end up taking. L

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (-9) over Washington Redskins — I’ll pick the Saints, but it’s too many points for me to lay with the Saints coaching suspensions and their best two defensive players (Jonathan Vilma and Will Smith) out. RGIII may razzle and dazzle in his regular season debut and keep this one close. L

Philadelphia Eagles (-9) over CLEVELAND BROWNS — Brandon Weeden looks like garbage so far. The Eagles defensive line looks superb. Expect the Eagles to get about 6 sacks in this game. I’m an Eagles fan. L

ATLANTA FALCONS (-4) over Kansas City Chiefs — The Falcons will be one of the NFC’s best teams. Their offense will be dangerous. W

GREEN BAY PACKERS (-5.5) over San Francisco 49ers — Arguably the best two NFC teams face off in week 1. I’ll stay away as a 24-20 Packers win seems quite possible, but I still have to lean Packers against the spread. I’ll take Aaron Rodgers at home against the best defense all day. L

Seattle Seahawks (-2.5) over ARIZONA CARDINALS — I’m very impressed with the Seahawks and can see them going 9-7 this season. Not so impressed with the Arizona Cardinals. L

Carolina Panthers (-1) over TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS — Very tempted to take this game as well, but hesitant to start taking road dogs. L

Pittsburgh Steelers (+1) over DENVER BRONCOS — Two reasons why I’ll pick the Steelers here. 1. Peyton Manning doesn’t look 100% and will need a few regular season games until he has “it” back. 2. This is a revenge game for the Steelers who were embarrassed by Denver in the playoffs last year.

BALTIMORE RAVENS (-6) over Cincinnati Bengals — I expect the Bengals to take a step back this year.

OAKLAND RAIDERS (+1) over San Diego Chargers — Monday Night in the black hole. Sticking with the home team in the lights.

RECORD: 5-8

Outside of HOU over MIA, which game is the best Week 1 pick against the spread?

Any combination of Eagles/Lions/Texans/Bears should hit in a teaser. I have a 4-team teaser with those games together which pays 2:1. Eagles -2, Lions -2, Texans -3.5, Bears -2.5. Good luck this week Vinny. Thanks for commenting. If you haven’t signed up for our pick ’em league, you should sign up (right above the Facebook like box on the right).

I agree with all your picks except for the Steelers who have no health running backs, a beat up o-line and their best wide receiver who just returned to the fold and will not play.
